Question 1: What is the scientific name for horses?

The scientific name for a horse is a Equus caballus.



Question 2: What other animals are horses related to?

Donkeys, Zebras, and Mules are all part of the same family as the horse.



Question 3: When did humans start taming horses and what do we use them for?

Horses were domesticated 6,000 years ago in Ukraine, southwest Russia and west Kazakhstan. Domestic horses then spread across Europe and Asia.


Question 4:There are over 300 different kinds of horses. They are divided into Hot bloods, Cold bloods, and warm bloods. What does this mean? Give one example of each kind.

Cold-blooded horses are Percherons, Shires, Clydesdales, and Belgians(which are types of horses). Large-boned and heavy-bodied they were selected for a calm temper.
Hot blooded horses are the Arabian and Thoroughbred horses as they tend to be a bit more nervous and energetic than some others.
Warm-blooded horse breeds were produced by crossing hot-blooded and cold-blooded horses. More commonly used for riding or for drawing wagons and carriages. Hanoverian, Holsteiner, and Trakhener horses are usually calmer than others but have the ability to move more athletically than the heavier breeds.

Question 7: What are some kinds of horses? Explain how to tell them apart.


This is the Norwegian fjord. It is a beautiful horse especially considering its two-tone mane. This makes it a great show horse.


This horse is called the Clydesdale. Clydesdales are bay-colored horses with white boots on their feet called feathering. They are huge, measuring up to six feet tall and weighing as much as 2,000 pounds. They have to eat a lot because of how big they are.


This is the Arabian horse. They are bred with horses of other breeds to add speed beauty, endurance, and strong bones.The Arabian horse developed in the deserts of Arabia by the Bedouin people.This close relationship with humans made the Arabian a horse with a kind temper and quick to learn. It also was used as a war horse. This meant that it was fast and very alert.
