A while ago we went to the Mini Plant and saw how they made the Minis. It turned out that the painting process and final assembly are 90% manual, while the rest is 90% automated. I found this surprising because I understood that robots can do so much now, and that lots of people have lost their jobs to robots. I had the impression that 100% of the work was done by robots. However, seeing almost all the work at final assembly and the painting process done by humans changed my mind. I also thought that it would be easier for robots to paint cars and put big pieces together than, for example, weld complicated pieces to each other. Even though I thought that the plant would be 100% robots, the number of robots still surprised me, and their jerky motions kind of unnerved me. In the end, it was an interesting and educational trip.
